Pine Deforestation at Balangoda

Pine trees have been cultivated in 39,440 acres owned by the government. Pine cultivation in Sri Lanka abounds in Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Badulla, Ratnapura, Kalutara, Galle and Matara. The Forest Conservation Department has commenced a de-forestation programme in State –owned areas to rid them of species of pine trees which have been identified by environmentalists as potentially harmful to the environment. They will be replaced with Mahogany, Hora and other trees known for the benefits of their large foliage.

This is one of those pine deforestation sites situated close to Belihuloya in Ratnapura district.
